Welcome to Washington Family Veterinary Clinic

December is..

Winter awareness month!

Here are just a few friendly reminders to help you and your pet stay safe this holiday season:

  • One of the first things we think of when the holidays come around are the tasty treats. However, we should be doing a double take when we think about the treats our pets get. Common treats for us that are toxic to our pets include: chocolate (the darker, the worse the affects,) coffee/caffeine, grapes/raisins, onions/garlic, avocados, macadamia nuts, Xylitol (a sweetener in many products,) yeast dough, fried foods (your pet cannot metabolize these very well,) alcohol, milk, and salt.
  • Common foreign bodies that our pets can end up eating that need to be surgically removed are: bones (poultry, ham, beef,) Christmas tree ornaments (tinsel, lights, stringed popcorn, beads,) toys, wrapping paper, clothing items, and batteries
  • We also see many toxicity problems associated with holiday plants; lilies we put out are severely toxic to cats and causes kidney failure. Mistletoe, poinsettias, holly, and pine trees are all toxic to our pets. Even the Christmas tree water poses a threat to the heath of our pets. Be sure to keep these out of reach of curious noses and teeth to prevent problems.
